What Are Backlinks?

Backlinks occur when one webpage links to another. For example, this is a backlink for RolCats. Search engines view backlinks as a kind of vote for a website and, very generally speaking, the more ‘votes’ a web page has, the higher it will rank on the search engines’ results pages. What Is mozRank?

mozRank is the SEOMoz equivelent to Google's PageRank metric. It's an approximate measure of what value a site has in the eyes of search engine. Like Pagerank, it is a logarithmic scale, meaning that a score of, say, 4 is not one higher than 3, but many times higher. Need an intro to logarithmic scales?

My *COUGH* Friend Buys Backlinks...?

You can buy backlinks, but there are many, many reasons not to.

Firstly, if you don't know exactly what you are doing, you'll probably get yourself caught and your site penalized or banned by the Google Gods pronto. Secondly, it will get very expensive, very fast. Finally, you'll never know if the links you bought helped or hindered your SEO efforts.
